Helping People with Disabilities Live Well and Age Well

a

30% of the people we support are between the ages of 55 and 82, representing what may be the first generation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to routinely reach this age.  We are adapting living environments to fit individual needs and tailoring services to match each person’s abilities and disabilities. Wayne (video above) is one example of a person who can benefit from your support.

Wayne is 68 years old and has spent the last thirty-three years living in community with his housemates at Living Well Disability Services’ Kennelly home. Like several Living Well Disability Services homes, the Kennelly home was built as a split level home with stairs. In recent months getting up and down the stairs has become increasingly difficult for Wayne. His arthritis has worsened with age, but Wayne feels best in his home and so he limits his trips up and down the stairs. “We’re right there watching him. He’s safe with our staff by his side, but he’s in pain. If we could renovate by adding an elevator, it would ease that pain significantly,” says Aaron Oden, Program Coordinator.

Oden continues, “They are really like one big family – several people even went to school together.” On more than one occasion, the physical or medical needs of the people served have become greater than what the environment was originally designed to support. “It wasn’t set up for older adults – of course we’ve made it work in different ways,” says Aaron. When someone had a fracture, broken bone or trouble with mobility, staff carried the upstairs beds downstairs to help people get the most out of their home.

Wayne’s experience is like that of many others in Living Well Disability Services homes. He is aging gracefully, and is prepared to stay in his home for many more years. Donors to Living Well Disability Services have already made it possible to add accessible ramps, porches, lifts, and elevators to several of our 33 homes. As the individuals we support are aging well, the need is growing for even more accessibility improvements.

Give your gift today and open up a world of opportunities for people who need our 24/7 care. Thank you for helping us advance our vision of a day when all people impacted by disabilities live well.
